Clay pipes were by far the most common type used in Britain in the eighteenth century. Their price was within the reach of most people. The larger pipes have bowls made of meerschaum, a type of soft stone that is easily carved.The original idea for this pipe is thought to have been based on the Biblical character of Jona and the Whale although I think the creature on the stem looks more like a sea serpent with scales and teeth which a whale would not have.
